Mount and chapel of Sra. Do Crasto

In the parish of Deocriste, municipality of Viana do Castelo, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Crasto was built in the middle of the 16th century. It is inferred that a Castro village may have existed on the site, although currently only small evidence of houses and some Castro ceramics have been discovered. The privileged location of the sanctuary allows for a unique view over the landscape of the Lima Valley and the foothills of the Serra de Arga. This chapel served as a point of reference for ships seeking the port of Viana. In the sacristy, we can find a wooden box offered by the crew of a ship from Brazil to Santa da Capelinha, for the help they believe they received. The wooden chest contained an image of Nosso Senhor dos Milagres, who is presently venerated on one of the side altars of the sanctuary. Every year, on Easter Sunday, the festivities are held in honor of Nossa Senhora do Crasto and Senhor dos Milagres, in a highly participated pilgrimage attended by people from the villages of the Lima valley.
