Telheiras ovens

The history of Alvarães has always been the extraction of clays for the manufacture of clay tiles, bricks and clay blocks and even today there are old ovens that have been preserved as is the case of the Alvarães clay tile ovens classified as a monument by the Portuguese Institute of Archeology (IPA No. 160902011).

The Telheiro de Alvarães oven is rectangular, excavated in the ground, and built in brick masonry. It is 7.5m long by 2m wide and 2.10m deep to the grid and 1.1m further to the base. It consists of a lower combustion chamber, accessed by a straight lintel, placed at the top and separated from the upper cooking chamber.

This is a traditional oven built for the handmade production of clay tile and brick. Built in the first half of the 20th century, its property is municipal.
