Parish Church of Deão

The first known reference to this church is found in a document from 1164, in which it is stated that D. João Peculiar had given Pedro Gonçalves the "prestimonium quod est inter Limian et Neviam excepta ecclesia de Capareiros cum sou cauto et Deian".

There is news regarding the parish of Daiam in the Inquiries of 1220, by D. Afonso II. On this date, he was abbot of the Martinho Fernandes church.

In the Inquiries of 1258 his chaplain was João Fernandes and, in 1370, he was confirmed abbot of Deão Aparício Rodrigues, his presentation being King Fernando. Deão was from the royal patronage, competing to confirm the presentation to the archbishop of Braga.

In the catalog of churches, which was carried out in 1320, São Pedro de Deão was taxed at 80 pounds.

In 1472, Santa Leocádia de Geraz do Lima was annexed.

In the record of the collection of "harvests" of the ecclesiastical benefits of the archbishopric of Braga, in the part concerning the Terras de Neiva, carried out by D. Jorge da Costa, between the years 1489 and 1493, the church of "Daiam" yielded 15 pounds, being, in cash with morturas, 1140 reis, and 47 reis and 8 pretos, in corn tithes.

The 1528 Book of Benefits and Commendations, of which there is a copy of the 18th century in the National Library of Lisbon, Deão, of the Terra de Aguiar de Neiva, presented an income of 20,000 réis.

Américo Costa describes it as an abbey for the presentation of the royal patronage, in the old municipality of Geraz do Lima.

In fact, in administrative terms, it belonged, in 1839, to the district of Ponte de Lima and the municipality of Geraz do Lima. In 1852, it was part of the district and municipality of Viana and, in 1878, the court of Darque.

It belongs to the Diocese of Viana do Castelo since November 3, 1977.
