Maria Gomes Pereira, known as Maria da Pomba was a woman of the people, born on November 3, 1882 and died at the age of 67 on June 22, 1950.
She was gifted with a natural tendency for sculpture, of stone and wood. She spent many hours in church looking at the images, which she later tried to reproduce, equipped with a point chisel on three cliffs in Alto da Calçada Nova. She lived in extreme poverty and hunger was a constant in her life. Her work can still be admired and praised in the cliffs that, in the middle of the slope of Padela, defy time and the present and future generations.
