Frome Honey to Kaolin
The Neiva Gateway of the Viana do Castelo Geopark, installed at the headquarters of the Vila de Punhe Parish Council, constitutes a touristic-educational reception center dedicated to the enhancement of the identity heritage of the left bank of Ribeira Lima, allowing visitors to know the geodiversity sites (ex. Juniperoxylon pachyderma Fossils) and the local classified areas, namely the natural monuments (ex. Dunas Trepadoras of Faro de Anha), the SCZs of the NATURA2000 Network (Lima River) and the archeo-sites. In addition to promoting the identity heritage of the left bank of Ribeira Lima, it also intends to encourage visits to the rest of the territory - geopark, reinforcing sustainable tourism, and raising awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving classified natural and cultural elements.
The Neiva Gateway is valued by the Museum of Honey and Kaolin, which highlights and enhances two endogenous products - honey and kaolin, bearing in mind that: (1) the Neiva valley is the most traditional and established beekeeping area in the municipality of Viana do Castelo; (2) the Vila de Punhe Parish Council has invested in promoting natural products such as honey and added value such as the soap that integrates honey, olive oil and local kaolin; (3) large patches of honey-bearing flora are known (Alnus sp., Betula sp., Castanea sp., Eucalyptus sp., Ilex sp., Pinus sp., Quercus sp., Salix sp., among others) whose ecosystems provide essential local services- production, regulation, cultural and of support - and depend to a large extent on bees (the Door will allow experiments to be carried out abroad, namely the management of educational apiaries to be installed in the Baldios de Carvoeiro); (4) the presence of kaolin (and other aggregates) is the result of a unique and complex geological history (Formation of Alvarães) with a high socioeconomic impact (eg production of tile, earthenware and porcelain).
