They are part of a complex supply system in the city of Viana do Castelo. The water was collected in several mines of the Monte de Santa Luzia, and was sent through stone pipes to Ursulinas, where one of the main water supply deposits in the city is still located. They are formed by interconnected solid granite blocks, laboriously perforated, to allow the passage of water inside.
