Corrugated pavements | Up to 40 million years old
The granitic pavements modeling is represented by three distinct evolutionary phases, which can be observed in different areas of the Natural Monument of the Alcantilado de Montedor.
- Phase I – Kluftkarren
Polygonal cracking results from the chemical weathering process, which causes vertical cracks that are wider on the surface than in depth.
- Phase II – Peduncles or Pedunculated boulders
Its shape results from the basal zone weathering, where contact with abrasive agents occurs. Over time the basal thinning will increase, causing the blocks to fall.
- Phase III – Corrugated pavements
After the peduncles fall, the sea waters maintain their abrasive action, creating a polished wavy floor.
