Erosion of the alteration mantle | From 40 million years ago to present
Granite is formed in depth and has characteristics that reflect the physical and chemical conditions in which it originated. Due to tectonic movements and erosion of the upper layers, granite occurs on the surface in large rock masses, being exposed to environmental conditions different from those of the place where it was formed, namely pressure and temperature. This environmental change can originate orthogonal joint families (perpendicular to each other) that allow waters infiltration that will later react with the minerals that constitute the granite. The rock change is faster in the vertexes and edges because they are areas more exposed to water circulation. This change gives rise to "cores" of healthy rock surrounded by a disaggregated matrix and friable material that retains humidity around the cores, contributing to the change progression to the block’s innermost areas. Subsequently, the water exerts its erosive and transport action, removing the sands, leaving the blocks in situ.
